Day 1: Transfer to Mbale and Arrival at Budadiri Tourism Center
Begin your adventure with a morning transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Mbale, a scenic town at the foothills of Mount Elgon. En route, enjoy views of lush Mabira Forest, rolling sugarcane plantations, and the source of the Nile. Arrive at the Budadiri Tourism Centre near Mount Elgon National Park where you will settle in and prepare for your hiking expedition ahead. Spend the evening relaxing and acclimatizing to the cooler mountain climate.
Day 2: Hike from Budadiri to Sasa Camp (Approx. 8 hours)
Embark on the trek starting from Budadiri, following the trail as it ascends through the forest towards Sasa Camp at about 2,900 meters altitude. The trail offers spectacular views of dense forest, rare bird species, and occasional wildlife such as monkeys and small antelope. Settle into Sasa Camp in the evening, nestled in the serene mountain environment, ideal for stargazing.
Day 3: Hike from Sasa Camp to Mude Camp (Approx. 6-7 hours)
Continue your steep ascent through montane forest and moorland vegetation towards Mude Camp located at 3,500 meters. The terrain varies from forested paths to open moorland, where you can glimpse Mount Elgon’s iconic peaks and the expansive caldera. Take in the peaceful atmosphere and prepare for an early summit hike the next day.
Day 4: Summit Wagagai Peak (4,321 meters) and Return to Mude Camp
Begin early for the highlight of your trek — ascending to Wagagai Peak, the highest point of Mount Elgon and Uganda’s fifth highest mountain. Enjoy panoramic views of the caldera, rolling hills, and distant landscapes of Kenya and Uganda. After the summit, descend back to Mude Camp for a restful evening and recount your achievements.
Day 5: Descend from Mude Camp to Budadiri and Transfer to Mbale
Retrace your steps on the descent from Mude Camp back to the Budadiri Tourism Centre. Reflect on your trekking adventure as you move through changing landscapes from moorland to forest. Once at Budadiri, transfer to Mbale town for a relaxing night at a lodge ready for your journey home.
Day 6: Return to Kampala/Entebbe
After breakfast, begin your scenic return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. Reflect on your enriching hiking experience on Mount Elgon and the natural beauty you encountered. Arrive relaxed and ready for your onward travel arrangements.
